Mission: Impossible? How the London Huddles Tackled the Untacklable

When putting together the agendas for the Expat Academy Symposium and Club 100 Huddles in London last week, I must admit a few of the topics submitted by our members made me take a sharp intake of breath. They felt a bit like being handed a Rubik’s Cube in the dark. How on earth were we going to solve these in a single afternoon? Or at all?!

But if last week taught me anything, it is that Global Mobility professionals have a unique superpower: we take the seemingly impossible, break it down, and make it beautifully tangible.

Here is how our brilliant rooms tackled two of the biggest "impossible" asks last week.

1. Finding the GM ROI Unicorn
In the Symposium session, I was effectively asked to cut through the noise and answer the ultimate industry riddle: does ROI (Return on Investment) actually exist in Global Mobility, and if so, how do we measure it?

Initially, it felt like chasing a myth. But once the room got to work, we realised the trick is to stop looking for one giant, elusive metric and instead break it down into "real", digestible parts. We discovered that what you measure depends heavily on your industry, but highly tangible factors like cost, carbon footprint, employee retention, and speed of deployment are fantastic places to start.

We then mapped out the how and when, from upfront cost estimates to post-assignment surveys. Finally, we tackled the crucial step: how to compile all of that data and translate it into a compelling story for the executive board. By the end of the session, an impossible, abstract concept had been transformed into a practical action plan.

2. Crafting a Five-Star Experience on a Zero-Pound Budget
Over in the Club 100 Huddle, the challenge was equally daunting. Members asked how they could significantly elevate the employee experience when they have absolutely no budget to play with.

Once again, the collective wisdom in the room proved that creativity trumps cash. We started looking at what already exists but perhaps gets lost in the noise. Why not loudly highlight existing Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), corporate discount packages, or cycle-to-work schemes directly within relocation packages?

We also looked at smart cost-cutting. For instance, slashing cultural training might save a quick £500, but it can massively damage the employee experience. On the other hand, auditing and cutting unnecessary storage fees could save £3,000 with zero negative impact.

The biggest surprise? The power of simply asking your suppliers. The room shared fantastic examples of perks you can leverage just by having the conversation, from airlines offering complimentary cultural insights to serviced accommodation providers throwing in gym access or local art classes.

The Takeaway
Catching the train home after the huddles, I felt incredibly inspired. When you are faced with a mobility challenge that feels completely insurmountable, the secret is simply to get the right people into the same room.

Nothing is truly impossible when you have the power of the network behind you.
