Our inaugural Nordic Network Huddle kicked off with a question that nearly derailed the entire day: what would you be doing if you weren't in Global Mobility? The answers poured in - bakers, café owners, gardeners, florists - and we quickly realised that a group lottery syndicate win that morning would have completely decimated the Nordic GM talent pool! Fortunately for the industry, everyone's numbers failed to come up, and we got on with what turned out to be a landmark day for our expanding community.
The Power of Reframing
We dedicated the morning to leadership training focused on the reframing mindset, and it struck a chord immediately. How many of us position GM's value purely through cost estimates and compliance? What if that tactical framing is exactly what's limiting our strategic influence? Using real-world examples (including a fascinating story about speedometers), we explored how asking different questions can completely transform GM's position and reputation.
The second half turned theory into practice. Working in small groups, attendees tackled real scenarios - transforming "What's the cost estimate?" conversations into strategic discussions about talent development and business impact. The energy was brilliant, with everyone leaving armed with concrete language they could use immediately. The key question we kept returning to: what are we actually trying to achieve?
Counselling Corner and Collective Wisdom
Our breakout sessions covered technology, vendors, and policy challenges, but one topic brought everyone back together - the Middle East conflict. Some challenges are too significant to split the group, and the thoughtful, supportive conversation that followed demonstrated the strength of this new Nordic community.
The AIRINC session from Sandra De Bruyker and Marie Soubessens couldn't have been better timed. In a world where traditional long-term assignments are no longer the norm and even short-term moves struggle through approval channels, attendees gained practical options for compensating different scenarios. This wasn't theoretical - these were tools people could implement straight away.
Real Leadership in Action
Our host Uliana from Danfoss delivered a brilliant Corporate Update, sharing how her team is driving purpose and linking GM directly with company needs whilst actively framing their value. It was the perfect complement to our morning's reframing work - seeing theory translated into real organisational practice. Danfoss provided not just a stunning venue but genuine hospitality that set the tone for open, honest conversations throughout the day.
The Great Reporting Line Debate
We finished with our signature debate session, tackling a question that gets people surprisingly passionate: does GM's reporting line actually matter? After a day spent reframing value and discussing strategic influence, the debate became deliciously layered. Strong opinions flew, perspectives shifted, and everyone left with fresh thinking on a topic many had assumed was settled.
A Network is Born
Launching the Nordic Network felt significant because it is significant. The Nordics have unique mobility challenges, shared regulatory environments, and increasingly aligned talent strategies. Having a dedicated space where professionals can tackle these regional nuances whilst connecting to our broader global community is very Expat Academy!
The collective intelligence, warmth, and willingness to engage honestly made this inaugural event everything we'd hoped for. Huge thanks to Uliana and the entire Danfoss team for their generous hosting - the perfect community members!
This is just the beginning for our Nordic community. We'll be back, and we can't wait to see this network grow. Want to join us next time? Reach out to Tony Miller (tony@expat-academy.com).
