Doing More with Less

Early June found us nestled within the impressive Lidl headquarters, courtesy of our gracious hosts at Schwarz Gruppe, where Germany's sharpest Global Mobility minds gathered to tackle the question on everyone's lips: how do you do more with less whilst still proving you're worth every penny?

The theme was clear - resource constraints are the new reality, and demonstrating commercial value isn't just nice-to-have, it's survival. So we crafted a day designed to help everyone pick their battles more strategically!

Measuring What Actually Matters

We launched straight into the thorny world of assignment success metrics, and let's be honest - it's about as straightforward as German tax law! The conversations were absolutely brilliant though, ranging from innovative "speed of getting up to speed" measurements to the perennial challenge of generous policies that attract talent but struggle to demonstrate retention value.
The standout insight? ROI measurement crumbles when you've got decentralised HR systems completely divorced from talent outcomes. One participant hit the nail on the head: centralising Global Mobility isn't just organisationally tidy, it's absolutely essential for generating meaningful metrics.

Corporate Wisdom Unveiled

Our Corporate Update from Guy Perraudeau and the Schwarz team was genuinely eye-opening. The fact they've managed to centralise Global Mobility before HR itself is centralised? That's not just impressive, it's practically revolutionary! Their approach of splitting into sub-teams and operating as an internal supplier had several heads of GM frantically taking notes - you could practically see the lightbulbs switching on around the room!
Hot Potatoes and Creative Solutions
Our Hot Potatoes session delivered its usual blend of practical challenges and ingenious workarounds. The classic dual-career dilemma of losing household income during international assignments sparked particularly creative thinking - from renting out family homes to specialised spouse coaching programmes. No silver bullets (there rarely are!), but the collective creativity was truly inspiring.
We then pivoted to immigration pragmatics - how to navigate the gap between "on paper" regulations and "on the ground" reality. The discussion around vendor relationships and building constructive relationships with authorities (all above board, naturally!) generated some genuinely valuable insights.

AI and Digital Aspirations

Global Expat Pay led a stellar workshop mapping digital transformation visions. The aspirations were admirably ambitious: single platforms for all assignees, strategic focus over administrative burden, personalised automated experiences.
But the barriers? Cultural resistance topped every list, followed closely by resource limitations and system fragmentation. Sound familiar? Their strategic framework resonated beautifully though - start small with impactful changes. Invoice digitisation might not sound revolutionary, but it creates immediate efficiency gains that build momentum for bigger transformations.

The Great Centralisation Debate

Finally, we stirred the pot with our Perspective Playground challenge: should Global Mobility programmes be centrally managed globally rather than regionally? The arguments for decentralisation were sophisticated - local expertise, faster decision-making, contextual flexibility. What emerged was refreshingly nuanced thinking: most see genuine value in centralised frameworks with localised delivery. Context really is everything!

The Verdict

Three insights stuck with me long after the last networking conversations:

First, ROI measurement remains our collective holy grail - universally desired, rarely achieved, with system integration as the primary villain.

Second, supporting modern family relocation requires creative financial and practical solutions that our community is brilliantly developing together.

Third, doing more with less is the new normal, but there are countless small steps that can help - from strategic team upskilling to embracing technology and simply becoming better storytellers.

The community feeling was strong, and the post-event feedback confirmed we're building something genuinely special in Germany. Our intimate huddles create exactly the environment where real problem-solving happens. I've had a number of people tell me they were 'inspired' - which couldn't make me happier! ROI!

This summary captures perhaps 1% of what transpired - the remaining 99% was networking, collaborative problem-solving, and those invaluable off-the-record conversations that make these gatherings so precious.

Want to join these crucial conversations next time? You know where to find us (Munich - 10 September)!

Huge thanks to Schwarz Gruppe for their hospitality, and to everyone who made the day so richly rewarding. Until next time!
