Before the benefits of the summer holiday wash away and everyone becomes buried under their To Do lists and the assignee’s challenges between now and the end of the year – is it time to just take a moment to reflect on plans for the rest of 2017?
I have never met a Global Mobility professional that isn’t being pulled in at least 10 different directions and that doesn’t face, and deal with, ‘urgent’ crisis’ on a weekly basis. I guess it is part of the territory, and the variety in the job is what we enjoy so much about this very specialised niche of HR.
However, sometimes in fighting the fires do we lose sight of our own goals and the additional value we can bring to the assignee experience and to the business? Do we need to refocus our energy on being proactive rather than reactive? Is it time to take on a new challenge that stretches us just that little bit (or a lot if you’re feeling brave) outside our comfort zone and allows us to learn and grow?
Has your most successful achievement ever been in something you can do almost with your eyes shut? Or have the greatest feelings of accomplishment come when you started on a new task that was outside your current skill set? Going outside our comfort zone can be stressful but often it is a healthy stress that propels us to grow and motivates us to achieve the end goal.
Isn’t it time for you to choose how successful you will be in your role and how you will be viewed within your organisation?
So if it’s the RFP you’ve been putting off as you’ve not done one before (but you know you could save the company a fortune), the new policy you want to introduce that you know is absolutely right for the business (they just don’t know that yet!), or the GM team profile that you want to get out there to the business so they come and talk to you and your team first rather than only when they have a mess you have to fix – now is the time to put it at the top of your To Do list.
Something that worked for me when I was in house was blocking out a session in my diary each week to refocus on it. Time blocked out helped me stay focused and kept it as a priority rather than it forever being shuffled down the To Do list.
I would love to hear what your ‘out of your comfort zone’ challenge is for the rest of 2017.
Also, don’t forget, if you’re an Expat Academy member you’ve got a team of people and a fantastic network of like minded professionals right behind you who will make the first step outside your comfort zone that little less scary…and if you’re not a member, then why not take a look at all of our fantastic membership benefits to see why joining the Expat Academy really is a good idea!
